Diet for Acid Reflux Disease

Finding and following the proper diet for acid reflux disease can be difficult.  There is a particular set of foods and substances that can aggravate your symptoms of heartburn.  Of course, the first step towards relief is to cut out completely or, at least, limit the ones that are causing you acid reflux.  The second step is to eat foods that are unlikely to cause the condition.

The following video is a good introduction and provides some general diet guidelines.  Below the video we’ve provided a handy list of some foods that are safe (IE, that have little potential in causing you heartburn).

Here are some foods to stay away from:

Fruits – Tomatoes (yes, tomatoes are fruits!),  acidic fruits and juices including: orange juice, lemonade, lemons, and cranberry juice.

Veggies – Raw onions are to be avoided (like the plague).

Meat – Buffalo wings (spicy stuff in general is to be avoided), chicken nuggets, chuck ground beef and marbled sirloin.

Grains – Mac and cheese and spaghetti

Dairy – Believe it or not, cottage cheese is to be avoided.  As is sour cream and ice cream.

Sweets/Junk Food - French fries, regular potato chips, corn chips, chocolate, brownies, doughnuts and butter cookies.

In contrast, here are some suggested diet for acid reflux foods that are very unlikely to cause you heartburn.

Cabbage for acid reflux Cabbage -an excellent option for heartburn sufferers

Fruits – Apples (fresh or dried). Apple juice is OK too.

Veggies – Potatoes, carrots, broccoli, cabbage (as mentioned in the above video), peas, and green beans are all safe.

Meat – Lean ground beef, egg whites, skinless chicken breast, london broil steak, and fish with no added oils or fats.

Grains – white or brown rice is fine, as is: white or multi-grain bread, pretzels, graham crackers, corn bread and cereal.

Dairy – Feta or goat cheese, soy cheese, fat-free sour cream and (fat-free) cream cheese.

Sweets/Junk Food – Jelly beans, red licorice, and baked potato chips (believe it or not) are safe!  Fat-free cookies should be okay to eat too.
